Replacement Window FAQs

How do you measure for replacement windows?

Taking proper measurements is essential when replacing windows. Even the smallest mistakes can compromise the window’s seal. For this and many other reasons, we highly recommend having a professional take your window measurements. However, should you choose to take your own measurements, you’ll want to measure:

  1. Horizontal width: Take three measurements: top, middle, and bottom. After taking these measurements, you’ll want to use the smallest of the three numbers.
  2. Vertical height: Again, take three measurements: left, middle, and right, and use the smallest number as your final measurement.
  3. Depth: Be sure to take this measurement on all sides of your window.

How much does it cost to replace windows?

The cost of replacing your windows varies based on a number of different factors, such as the size and style of your windows. How do you measure windows for blinds?

The process of measuring your windows for blinds can differ depending on whether you have inside or outside mount blinds. Follow the steps below, while considering the types of blinds you plan to install:

Inside mount blinds:

  • Measure your window frame’s depth.
  • Measure your window’s width in three places: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest of these numbers as your final measurement.
  • Measure the height of your window in three places: left, right, and center. Depending on the type of blinds or shade you are installing, you will either use the smallest or the largest of these measurements.
  • Do not deduct anything from your width or height measurements, as manufacturers will already account for allowances and deductions.

Outside mount blinds:

  • Measure the width you would like your blinds to cover, including at least 1 ½” on both sides for optimal coverage.
  • Measure height, starting from the point your blinds will be hung, down to the window sill. Be sure to leave 1 ½” – 2” of overlap on top to account for your blinds’ mounting hardware.
  • Again, do not deduct anything from your measurements, as this will be accounted for by manufacturers.

How do you replace a window screen?

Window screens play both functional and aesthetic role in the operation of your windows. If your screen has serious damages such as holes or tears, it’s important to replace them as soon as possible. To replace your window screen properly, follow the steps below:

  • Remove the window screen from your window.
  • Laying your screen flat, remove the current window screen mesh from the grooves that hold it in place.
  • Roll out and stretch the replacement screen mesh over your window screen frame, leaving some extra room along the edges, and cut using your tool of choice.
  • Use a spline roller to push your new screen mesh into the grooves of your screen’s frame.
  • Once the new mesh is secure, trim the extra material along the edges.
  • Reinstall your finished window screen.

What is a window sash?

The window sash is the part of the window which holds the glass panes and their components together. The window sash itself is fitted to the window frame and can be either stationary or mobile depending on the type of window. For double hung windows, for example, the window sash moves up and down, allowing fresh air to flow in and out of your home.

How should you clean windows?

The difference between clean and dirty windows is stark. To keep your windows looking fresh and inviting, follow the simple steps below:

  • Use a vacuum to clean larger dust and debris.
  • Use a soft cloth with soapy water to clean your window sash and frame.
  • Wipe the glass panes using a paper towel (or lint free wipe) and a glass cleaning solution, either store bought or homemade.
  • Remove your window screens and wash them using a simple combination of soap and water. Be sure to allow your screens to air-dry after cleaning.
